RE: yellowstone or grand canyon for first out west trip

Have been to both areas and although I love Utah, I would definitely suggest the Yellowston/Tetons for your first trip. And for fun, consider Virginia City, Montana which lies just northwest of West Yellowstone. Check it out on the internet and see what you think.

RE: husband with alzheimers

Keep going as long as you can, and start driving more and more. You'll know when you and he can go no longer travel together in the RV. So just enjoy the time you have for as long as it lasts.

RE: Oregon coast question

In addition to Sea Perch being much too expensive these days, they can flood during bad storms.

Aspect and Cambria

Does anyone know if the Winnebago Aspect and/or Itasca Cambria have been discontinued? Can't find any reference to 2009 models.

RE: gas stations

I also just pull forward to the front pump and fill from the rear. Never had any complaints. Afterall, the amount of gas it takes to fill the tank more than compensates blocking one pump. :-)

RE: Back-Up Monitor

I don't have any choice. When the camera monitor was installed, it was hard-wired in. Can't turn it off.
But I have another question. Since it is hard-wired, does that mean there's a constant drain on the battery when the ignition is off?

RE: Out 1st real trip please help/advise

We've found that it's not the distance travelled, but the time on the road that counts the most. We make frequent stops to relax and walk the dog, but still find that we're pretty tired after 4-5 hours of driving. And we like to find a place to stop well ahead of dinner time so the "chef" has time to relax before having to cook.
One of the best things about RV travel is the ability to stay flexible so you can include the unexpected. And you'll find your own rhythm after a few days.

RE: new tires

There are Les Schwab tire centers in Lincoln City, Newport and Florence. Last time I checked, they carry Toyo.

RE: Oregon coast

The route Donn described is a good one if you want to avoid Portland and aren't in a hurry, plus it's very scenic. Otherwise, follow I-84 all the way in. Then follow the signs to Beaverton and Hwy 26 which goes all the way to the coast. That route takes you into Seaside, and Ft. Stevens will be to the north. On the coast, don't miss the Sea Lion Caves and don't worry about reservations. There are plenty of places both public and private to choose from.

The advantage of Canyonlands is that it's walking distance to groceries and restaurants and you're assured of shade.

RE: camping in northwest USA

I also recommend Yellowstone, but at that time of the year, be prepared for the possibility of snow. And don't miss Craters of the Moon. It's terribly hot in summer but should be great in the spring. If concerned or just curious, you can check out their websites for information regarding average temps.

RE: OREGON COAST

I recommend the maritime museum and the Astor column in Astoria, Fort Clatsop which is nearby, the Hatfield Science Center in Newport and the Sea Lion Caves further south.

RE: Hwy 199 Grants Pass to Crescent City

Agree that it is very scenic, but you need to pay close attention at times. And east to west is probably less problematic than west to east. :-)

RE: I-5 in January

Have traveled I-5 many winters and faced treacherous ice and snow on roadway only twice. Once in Weed, Ca at night and once going over the grapevine out of LA also in the evening. Just watch the weather predictions, and if a storm comes in, hole up for a while. It won't be long. Since it's the major route north and south, the roads are cleared quickly. But if the truckers stop, be sure you do, too. The coastal route avoids most of the mountains, but is often very icy, and you have to be careful where you cross back over.
